10 The very best | 9 Excellent | 8-7 Very good | 6-5 Fair | 4-3 Poor

The place is packed at 7:30 pm but the different-sized tables are spaced out nicely to allow guests to have their own private conversations without impinging on others.

Despite being mainly a seafood restaurant—one side is lined with tanks of live seafood—a major offering is Peking duck, enjoyed two ways: crepe-wrapped crunchy skin with a yummy dip and minced duck parceled up in a crisp lettuce cup. The seafood-based dishes, camaron rebusado and the pink garoupa doused in sweet and sour sauces, are delectable. The beef tenderloin is predictably tender, and the healthy serving (in both meanings) of massive abalone mushrooms and kailan is exceptional. The house rice is a meal in itself. Hai Shin Lou has an extensive dessert menu but the main dishes are more than adequate (the smallest serving is quite hefty!), if you are not into dessert. If you are, fresh mango with ice cucumber and pandan jelly with syrup is highly recommended.

There are house red and white wines and a couple of labels, including one from China. A French Macon Villages 2004 white wine goes well with the feast.

The wait staff are courteously attentive but not obtrusive. They serve the wine and portions from the serving dishes on your plate. The plates are continuously changed.

The dining experience is excellent. Though small (ideally, degustation) servings are requested, the dishes' size is enough for more than a couple of diners. Certainly good value for money.

Signature dishes:

  • Peking duck
  • Lobster
  • Pink garoupa
